Mentoring Youth

The Importance of Mentoring Youth

Mentoring for First-Generation BIPOC is critical to fostering a positive ethnic identity and sense of school belonging, a family-oriented approach that also supports the mentee’s family, and close collaboration between community leaders, schools, and families of First-Generation BIPOC.

The Youth Mentoring Program Goal

To ensure that all migrant students reach challenging academic standards and graduate with a high school diploma that prepares them for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment.

How It Works

Participants join a cohort for the selected year and meet at least once a month in groups for about 9 months – typically the school year. Mentoring takes place remotely and in person. Participants also get matched with a mentor with whom they work with throughout the program.
Mentors act as role models, providing a positive environment where young people feel safe and encouraged. They help them develop their own motivation and improve their confidence and self-esteem, as well as provide academic support. Together with their mentors, they set different personal goals related to their personal development, character and academic achievement.
